Doom metal takes Black Sabbath’s slow, heavy side as one of its central foundations. The style began forming into a clearer underground movement during the 1980s through Saint Vitus, Trouble and Candlemass, putting weight and mood ahead of speed. Later branches crossed into death metal, gothic metal, sludge and stoner metal.
Italian band Organ combine instrumental post-metal with doom and cite Electric Wizard, Sleep and Om among their earlier reference points. Argentine project Monovoth expand doom with black metal, dissonant death metal and experimental noise, while Poland’s Dense Haze arrived through stoner rock before moving into sludge and stoner doom. Post-metal crosses into parts of this work, but doom’s core history remains tied to slow, Sabbath-derived heavy metal.
