Stoner metal took shape in the 1990s around heavy riffs, psychedelia and acid-rock influence, with Black Sabbath as a major earlier reference. Doom metal was a formative influence on the style, and Kyuss and Monster Magnet became central names in the 1990s field.
IDIOTEQ’s archive reaches back to Asbestos Death, the band that preceded Sleep, and later carries Sleep’s “The Clarity”. Sweden’s Skogskult sit near Sleep, Yob, Acid King and Electric Wizard, while Richmond’s Mt. Forever work in territory shared with the Melvins, Kyuss, Danzig and Goatsnake.
