Crossover thrash fuses hardcore punk with thrash metal. Technical riffs, lead breaks and a metallic chug sit on top of a hardcore ethos, and some bands keep hardcore song structures under the riffing. Metal started creeping into hardcore in the mid-1980s, and by the end of that decade crossover between hardcore and thrash metal had exploded. By 2018 a newer wave had grown around bands such as Power Trip, Iron Reagan, Foreseen and Mindforce, with Power Trip writing in standard tuning and leaving out the double bass drum.
Leeds band Pest Control started in lockdown, when three friends who wanted to play crossover thrash got together, and its members grew up between the city’s metal and hardcore scenes. Wellington’s Brainwave pack dirty thrash metal, hardcore punk and a heavy breakdown into the two minutes and 15 seconds of “The Truth”. London’s Inhuman Nature wrote “Servants Of Annihilation” about doing the long drive to a show, and Virginia’s Enforced released the “A Leap Into the Dark” EP just before a European tour with Gatecreeper and 200 Stab Wounds.
